A Canadian citizen pleaded guilty to 2 charges of insulting the modesty of his Indonesian helper at his condominium. He was jailed for 12 weeks.
Paul Kwan is in Singapore on an employment pass. He had bought a recording device and used it to film his maid in the kitchen toilet. The camera was pointed towards the shower stall of the toilet.
Kwan had placed it on recording mode, retrieving the footage after the victim went to bed. Kwan managed to film the maid showering.
When the maid found out, she packed up and left, going to her agent who reported the matter to the police.
The Judge said that “domestic helpers are entitled to work in a safe environment without the fear of having their privacy intruded upon by members of the household they are working in.”
Kwan could have been jailed for up to 18 months and/ or fined for each charge of insulting the modesty of his maid.
